Why Recycling is the Best Kept Secret in Climate Change
(And How to Change That)
Kate Bailey, Eco-Cycle Solutions Director, Eco-Cycle
Globally and locally, increasing emphasis is on one key performance metric: reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. But most climate action plans aren’t even measuring the GHG savings from recycling and composting—they’re only tracking landfill methane emissions. Zero Waste has been left out of the climate discussion because of shortcomings in how we measure GHG emissions. Using new climate accounting tools, we can reposition Zero Waste as one of the fastest, easiest solutions to reduce local and global emissions.
Recycling is a proven solution to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—our national efforts save the GHG equivalent of taking 36 million cars off the road for a year. Yet recycling and Zero Waste strategies receive little more than a token mention in most local climate action plans, and they are nowhere to be found in the national discussions on climate change. In fact, chances are your community isn’t even counting your recycling efforts in your climate action plan, even though your programs are significantly reducing GHG emissions every day. How can we change the conversation around climate so materials management is recognized for its current, and potential, role in reducing emissions?
We need to start by understanding how your climate staff measures your local emissions. Learn why climate accounting systems don’t currently recognize your recycling efforts and how new tools that measure our “consumption emissions” are changing the game. Discover how to bring these tools to your climate team and start changing the conversation in your community based on what’s worked (and failed) elsewhere. Recycling has been called one of the best kept secrets in reducing climate change emissions. It’s time we get the secret out that recycling is a fast, cost-effective and proven local solution to reduce GHG emissions and make materials management a cornerstone of your climate action plan.
